Stephen writes contemporary thrillers and historical mysteries that explore power – and what people will do to get it.

His new novel, THE GODS, is a contemporary technothriller in the tradition of Michael Crichton, with elements of corporate conspiracy reminiscent of John Grisham. It imagines what could happen when men of immense wealth decide that death is an inconvenience to be avoided at all costs. It will appeal to readers of Dave Eggers, Blake Crouch, Daniel Suarez, and anyone who has watched the world's tech billionaires accumulate power with a growing sense of unease. The Gods will be released on 15 October 2026.

His debut novel, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF ABERCROMBIE LYLE, is an historical thriller set in fascist Italy with an alternative history twist. It’s a story of love, deceit and revenge, with family secrets and a mystery to unravel, as it shifts between timeframes en route to a final reckoning.

Stephen has a DPhil in Modern History and a BA (Hons) in Philosophy, Politics & Economics from Oxford University, as well as an MA in History from the University of Michigan. He has taught history and political thought in several US and UK universities, including UC Berkeley, Boston College, San Francisco State University and St. Mary’s University Twickenham.

He has been writing fiction and non-fiction for many years alongside careers in academia, publishing, communications and strategic consulting. Originally a native of Liverpool, Stephen now lives in nearby Warrington with his wife, Millicent, and their dog, Sebastian.
